Water is left standing in the drum after the cycle completes. The most common cause is a clogged drain pump filter or a kinked drain hose. The washer's drain pump may also have failed.
Clothes come out soaking wet after the cycle. Common causes include an unbalanced load, a faulty lid switch or door lock, or a worn drive belt.
Water pools around or under the machine. Leaks typically originate from a bad hose, a worn door seal (on front-loaders), or a loose connection.
The machine is completely unresponsive. Check that the power cord is plugged in, the outlet works, and the circuit breaker hasn't tripped. If power is present, the control board or door lock may have failed.
Banging, grinding, or squealing during the spin cycle. Common causes include worn drum bearings, unbalanced loads, or worn shock absorbers.
The drum isn't filling. Check if the water tap is open, if the inlet hose is kinked, or if the water supply filter is clogged.
The cycle halts unexpectedly. This can be caused by a power interruption, an error code, or a safety mechanism triggered by an unbalanced load or drainage issue.
The door remains locked after the cycle. Check if the cycle has fully completed, if there's still water in the drum (run a drain cycle), or if the door lock mechanism has failed.
Clothes are washed in cold water despite a hot wash setting. The heating element or the temperature sensor (NTC) may have failed.
Clothes come out still dirty after a cycle. Common causes include overloading, using too much or too little detergent, or a failing wash pump.
Musty odors from the drum or door gasket. Front-loaders are prone to mold and mildew due to trapped moisture — 13% of front-load owners reported mold and mildew issues.
Water overflows from the drum. This is often caused by a faulty water inlet valve or a pressure switch that isn't detecting the water level correctly.

The most common cause is a clogged drain pump filter, followed by a kinked drain hose or a faulty drain pump. Start by cleaning the pump filter behind the small access panel at the bottom front of the machine — this is often a free fix. If water still stands after a cycle, the pump likely needs replacing. An unbalanced load is the most common cause — redistribute the clothes and restart. If the drum still won't spin, the door lock, lid switch, drive belt, or motor capacitor may be faulty. Front-loaders with a failed door lock will not spin at all for safety. Full guide →
Samsung 5C (also shown as 5E) is a drain error — the washer is not draining water. Common causes are a clogged drain pump filter, a kinked drain hose, or a faulty drain pump. Clean the pump filter first; if the code persists, the drain pump likely needs replacement. Full Samsung error guide →
LG OE means the washer is not draining. The most common cause is a clogged drain pump filter, followed by a kinked drain hose or a faulty drain pump. Clean the pump filter first; if the code persists, the drain pump likely needs replacement. Full LG error guide →
Use the 8-year, 50% rule. Before year 8, repair almost anything — a drain pump, door lock or control board is nearly always cheaper than a new machine. After year 8, replace when the quote passes half the price of a new unit. Structural failures (drum bearings, outer tub, motor) on machines over 8 years are usually not worth repairing.
