Maytag Error Codes

Every Maytag Washing Machine Error Code, Decoded

Maytag uses two code systems depending on the machine. Front-load washers report faults as an F#E# letter-number pair. Top-load high-efficiency washers use short words and abbreviations (Sud,Ofb, LdL), plus the same F-and-E pairs for system errors.

F9 E1
Long drain

Drain times longer than expected — typically over eight minutes. Water stays in the drum.

Common causes: clogged drain pump filter, kinked drain hose, or a failing drain pump.
F8 E1
LF
Lo FL
Low flow

The washer senses low water flow or takes too long to fill.

Common causes: water supply off, inlet hose kinked or frozen, or a clogged inlet filter.
F5 E2
Door lock error

The door is not locking properly.

Common causes: items blocking the door, door not fully closed, or a failed door lock assembly.
F7 E1
Motor speed sensing error

The motor cannot achieve the correct speed for the cycle.

Common causes: shipping bolts not removed, overloaded washer, or a faulty motor control board.
F8 E2
Dispenser system error

There is a problem with the detergent or softener dispenser system.

Common causes: clogged dispenser, failed dispenser motor, or blocked dispenser path.
F51
Rotor position sensor fault

On Maytag Bravos and Bravos XL models (MVWB, MVWX series), F51 means the main control board has lost track of basket rotation from the rotor-position sensor (RPS).

Cause: intermittent connection at the RPS causing the electronic control to indicate an F51 code.
LdL
Lid not locking

The lid is not locking (top-load models).

Common causes: failed lid lock mechanism or broken lid switch.
LdU
Lid cannot unlock

The lid cannot unlock after the cycle.

Common causes: jammed lid lock mechanism or failed control board.
drn
Not draining

The washer is not draining properly (top-load models).

Common causes: clogged drain pump filter or kinked drain hose.
Sud
Sd
Excess suds

Too many suds in the washing machine.

Fix: Use HE detergent only. The washer will automatically extend rinse time. Run one empty cycle on the hottest setting with no detergent to clear buildup.
Ofb
Out of balance

The washer load is out of balance.

Fix: Redistribute the load in the drum and press start again.
OL
Overload

The washer load was too large.

Fix: Remove several items and restart the cycle.
HC
Hoses reversed

Hot and cold inlet hoses installed incorrectly (reversed).

Fix: Shut off water and swap the hoses.
lid
Lid open

The washer lid was left open.

Fix: Close the lid firmly.
PF
Power failure

The wash cycle was interrupted by a power failure.

Fix: Hold Start to resume the cycle where it left off.
Int
Paused / cancelled

The cycle was paused or cancelled.

Fix: Press Pause twice, then Power once.
LOC
LC
Control Lock

Control Lock has been activated on the panel.

Fix: Hold the Control Lock button for 3 seconds to unlock.
rL
F34
Items in Clean Washer cycle

Items were detected in the washer during the Clean Washer cycle.

Fix: Remove the items and restart the cycle.
dET
Detergent cartridge

Detergent cartridge not detected in the dispenser (on Optimal Dose models).

Fix: Reseat the cartridge firmly and close the drawer until it clicks.

Maytag Technologies

We're Trained on Maytag's Advanced Technologies

Maytag's American-engineered washers carry commercial-grade components that demand specialist knowledge — and that's exactly what we have.

Maytag Commercial Technology (MCT)

Maytag's Commercial Technology (MCT) platform brings commercial-grade components to residential washers. From heavy-duty springs and belts to beefed-up motors and frames, MCT washers are engineered for durability. We diagnose and repair MCT-specific drive components, suspension systems and control boards.

DuraCore™ System

Maytag's commercial-grade DuraCore™ System eliminates high-maintenance belts, gears and pulleys in favor of a robust Direct Drive Motor and Base-Mount Suspension, reducing parts by 50%. The DuraCore™ Direct Drive Motor unleashes 900 RPM of speed to power through the toughest loads. We service the direct drive motor, base-mount suspension and related components.

PowerWash® Cycle

Maytag's PowerWash cycle uses a combination of extra cleaning action and heated water to remove everyday tough stains in a single wash. It delivers best-in-class cleaning driven by the PowerWash system. We diagnose and repair heating elements, wash action components and the control board that manages this cycle.

Deep Fill Option

Maytag's Deep Fill option (also called Deep Water Wash on some models) adds extra water to your load, usually filling it to the maximum water level. This helps clean items like towels, jeans and other sturdy or heavily soiled fabrics. We service water inlet valves, pressure sensors and the control board that manages water level selection.

PowerWash® Agitator

Maytag's PowerWash agitator provides robust wash action for tough loads. Combined with the PowerWash cycle, it tackles any size load with extra cleaning action. We repair agitator dogs, drive splines and related components.

Sanitize with Oxi

Maytag's Sanitize with Oxi cycle removes 99.9% of bacteria and eliminates allergens. We service the heating elements, steam generators and control boards that manage this cycle.

Smart Capable / Maytag App

Maytag's Smart Capable washers can be controlled and monitored via the Maytag app. We diagnose and repair connectivity issues, Wi-Fi module faults and control board problems affecting the smart system.

Optimal Dose Dispenser

Maytag's Optimal Dose dispenser automatically releases the right amount of detergent at the right time for optimal cleaning. We repair dispensing pumps, sensors and the auto-dose control board. This is common on MHW8630 models.

Common Maytag Problems

Maytag Washer Faults We Fix Every Day

Pick the symptom closest to your situation. Each one links to a dedicated page with detailed causes and repair information.

Won't Drain (F9 E1 / drn)

Standing water after the cycle. Most common cause is a clogged drain-pump filter or coin trap. We clean the filter, check the drain hose and replace the drain pump if needed.

Learn more

Won't Fill (F8 E1 / LF)

Washer won't fill. Check if the tap is open, the inlet hose is kinked or frozen, or the supply filter is clogged. We repair the water inlet valve and pressure switch.

Learn more

Won't Spin

Clothes coming out soaked. On Maytag, won't spin often stops at the transmission. Heavy-duty transmission or shift actuator issues are common culprits. We also diagnose faulty lid switches, broken drive belts and motor couplings.

Learn more

Making Loud Noises

Banging, grinding or squealing during the spin. Common causes include worn drum bearings, unbalanced loads or worn shock absorbers. A rumble climbing with spin speed or play at the drum rim on MHW front-loaders raises the bearing and tub-seal question.

Learn more

Leaking Water

Water on the laundry room floor. Common causes include a loose supply hose connection, a misaligned drain filter or a worn door seal (door boot mould is common on MHW5630 and MHW6630 front-loaders).

Learn more

Excessive Vibration / Walks

Machine moves during the spin cycle. On top-loaders, heavy vibration and a tub that hits the cabinet usually means the four suspension rods that hang the tub have worn springs. We replace suspension rods, shock absorbers and level the machine.

Learn more

Won't Turn On

No power at all. We check the power supply, control board and door lock mechanism.

Learn more

Stops Mid-Cycle

A cycle stalling at drain, a spin that never reaches speed, or a door that will not unlock. Maytag uses the same F#E# code system as every Whirlpool Corporation brand. We diagnose the drain pump, filter, door lock assembly, pressure switch and motor control in that order.

Learn more

Bad Smell

Musty odours. We clean and replace mouldy door gaskets and address drainage issues causing bacteria buildup. Common on front-load models. We recommend regular Clean Washer cycles with affresh tablets.
