Common Causes of Poor Washing Machine Cleaning Performance

Twelve root causes — with the critical distinction between user error and genuine machine fault.

1. Overloading the Drum

The #1 cause of poor cleaning performance. When the drum is overfilled, the tumbling action is reduced, so clothes don't move freely and detergent can't reach all items. For front-loaders, the drum should be filled to about 60% of its capacity. For top-loaders, do not exceed 3/4 of the cylinder capacity. Overloading also blocks tumbling and water flow.

The fixReduce your load size. For front-loaders, fill to 60% capacity. For top-loaders, fill to 3/4 capacity. Load items in loose heaps evenly around the washplate.
2. Too Much Detergent (Residue Buildup)

Using too much detergent is just as bad as using too little — and often worse. Excess detergent creates too many suds, which cushion the clothes so they can't agitate against each other properly. The excess suds can cause the washer to run at a reduced spin speed, resulting in very wet loads. Over time, detergent residue builds up inside the drum, dispenser drawer, and hoses, creating a film that transfers onto clothes. In Saudi Arabia's hard water, this problem is worse because detergent doesn't dissolve as easily.

The fixReduce your detergent amount by 25–50%. Use HE (High-Efficiency) detergent only — never use non-HE detergent in an HE machine. Never go over the MAX line. Run a Tub Clean cycle monthly to remove residue.
3. Too Little Detergent (Insufficient Cleaning Power)

Using too little detergent — especially in hard water — means there aren't enough active ingredients to lift dirt. Hard water reduces detergent effectiveness because the minerals (calcium and magnesium) bind to soap molecules, preventing them from fully lifting dirt. In Saudi Arabia's Dammam, Al Khobar and Dhahran, the water is notoriously hard. Too little detergent results in laundry not getting properly clean and, over time, clothes may become grey and stiff due to limescale deposits.

The fixUse the correct amount of detergent for your water hardness and load size. In hard water areas, you may need slightly more than the package recommends, or use a water softener.
4. Using the Wrong Cycle or Settings

Each cycle is an optimized combination of agitation speed, spin speed, and water temperature. Choosing the wrong cycle means you're not getting the right combination. Using the Speed Wash or Wool/Delicates cycle for heavily soiled clothes results in poor cleaning because these cycles are designed for shorter run times and gentler drum motion.

The fixMatch the cycle to your load. For heavily soiled items, use Heavy Duty or Prewash/Soak. For everyday loads, use Normal or Cotton. Select the appropriate Soil Level setting.
5. Cold Water and Undissolved Detergent

In winter, incoming water temperature drops significantly. When only cold water is used, detergent may not dissolve completely, which can reduce cleaning performance. Undissolved detergent can clump together or become insufficient for effective cleaning. Even for cold wash settings, some warm water may be added to maintain a minimum temperature.

The fixUse warm water for heavily soiled items and during winter. Select the Warm or Hot wash temperature when fabrics allow. If you must use cold water, use a liquid detergent (dissolves more easily than powder) and reduce the load size.
6. Detergent Drawer and Dispenser Residue

Detergent residue buildup in the drawer and dispenser prevents detergent from being properly released into the drum. If detergent is put in the prewash compartment although the prewash cycle is not selected, the machine may take this detergent during rinsing — so detergent may not reach the clothes at the right time. Detergent can also get damp and clump in the drawer, especially in humid coastal cities like Dammam and Khobar.

The fixRemove the detergent drawer completely. Soak it in warm soapy water. Clean the siphon cap and drawer housing with a toothbrush. Rinse thoroughly. Dry the drawer before putting in detergent.
7. Clogged Debris Filter (Front-Loaders)

A clogged debris filter traps dirt and lint, preventing proper drainage and water circulation. If the filter is clogged, water cannot drain properly and the wash water becomes dirty, re-soiling clothes instead of cleaning them. The filter can also trap lint that later transfers onto clothes. See our full guide on washer won't drain.

The fixClean the debris filter regularly. Turn off the water supply and unplug the washer. Locate the debris filter (usually behind the lower front panel). Remove any trapped debris. Rinse the filter and reinstall securely.
8. Dirty Drum and Residue Buildup

Over time, detergent residue, fabric softener, and minerals from hard water build up on the inside of the drum. This residue can transfer onto clothes during the wash cycle, making them look dirty even after a fresh wash. Run the Tub Clean cycle regularly to prevent residue buildup. See our full guide on bad smell from washer.

The fixRun a Tub Clean or Self Clean cycle monthly with a washing machine cleaner tablet. Leave the washer door slightly open after each wash to prevent moisture buildup.
9. Using Fabric Softener Excessively

Fabric softener leaves a waxy residue on fabrics. Over time, this residue builds up and can make towels less absorbent, cause clothes to look dingy, and even trap dirt. It can also stain clothing not designed for it. Fabric softener residue can also build up in the drum, contributing to the same residue-transfer problem as detergent.

The fixSkip liquid fabric softener entirely. Use wool dryer balls or dryer sheets instead. If you must use softener, use it sparingly and run an extra rinse cycle periodically to clear buildup.
10. Washer Not Level

An unlevel washer could prevent detergent from dispensing correctly, or reduce spin speed because of wobbling and vibration. If the washer is not level, the drum may not tumble clothes properly and water may not circulate evenly. This is an often-overlooked cause of poor cleaning.

The fixUse a spirit level on top of the machine. Adjust the leveling feet by turning them clockwise or counterclockwise until the machine sits level. Tighten the lock nuts against the base.
11. Reversed Hot and Cold Inlet Hoses

If the hot water inlet hose is connected to the cold water supply and vice versa, the washer will use the wrong water temperature. Reversed inlet hoses can result in warm rinsing water, setting wrinkles into garments that require cold-water rinses. This is more common than people think, especially after a move or a DIY installation.

The fixCheck that the hot water inlet hose is connected to the hot water supply and the cold water inlet hose to the cold water supply. Both faucets should be turned on completely.
12. Old or Set-In Stains

Ground-in dirt on cuffs and collars, or stains that have set over time, are difficult to remove with a standard wash cycle alone. The washer cannot remove stains that have already bonded to the fabric. Old or set-in stains may remain even after washing. If stains are allowed to dry, they may become permanent.

Pre-treat stains immediately when they occur. Apply a stain remover pre-treatment to tough stains. Pre-soak heavily soiled garments. For collars and cuffs, pre-treat with detergent and hand-rub before machine washing. Use the Prewash or Soak option.

How to Improve Your Washing Machine's Cleaning Performance

Work through them in order — most cleaning complaints are resolved by step 6.

⚠️ Safety warning: Always unplug the washing machine and turn off the water supply before inspecting the filter or internal components. Never open the control board or motor housing yourself.
1

Do not overload the washer. For front-loaders, fill to 60% capacity. For top-loaders, fill to 3/4 capacity. Load items in loose heaps evenly around the washplate. If you can't close the door easily, it's overloaded.

2

Use HE detergent only. Reduce your detergent amount by 25–50% if you've been using too much. In hard water areas, use the recommended amount or slightly more. Never go over the MAX line. Use a measuring cup — don't guess.

3

For heavily soiled items and during winter, use warm or hot water. Check garment care labels for temperature recommendations. Warm water helps detergent dissolve completely and improves cleaning performance.

4

Clean the Detergent Drawer 10 minutes

Remove the detergent drawer completely. Soak it in warm soapy water. Use an old toothbrush to scrub the siphon cap and drawer housing. Rinse thoroughly. Dry the drawer before putting in detergent. This ensures detergent is released at the right time.

5

Clean the Debris Filter 10 minutes

Turn off the water supply and unplug the washer. Open the lower front access panel. Place a towel and shallow pan underneath. Open the small residual water drain hose cap first, let water drain. Then unscrew the large filter cap. Remove lint, coins, and debris. Rinse the filter and reinstall securely.

6

Run a Tub Clean Cycle 1–4 hours

Run a Tub Clean, Self Clean, or Pure Cycle with a washing machine cleaner tablet. This removes residue buildup inside the drum. Leave the door slightly open after the cycle to dry the drum.

7

Check Water Inlet Hose Connections 5 minutes

Check that the hot water inlet hose is connected to the hot water supply and the cold water inlet hose to the cold water supply. Both faucets should be turned on completely. If you recently moved or installed the washer yourself, verify the connections.

8

Level the Washer 10 minutes

Use a spirit level on top of the machine. Adjust the leveling feet by turning them clockwise or counterclockwise until the machine sits level and does not rock. Tighten the lock nuts against the base.

9

Pre-Treat Stains Before Washing 5 minutes

Apply a stain remover pre-treatment to tough stains. Pre-soak heavily soiled garments. For collars and cuffs, pre-treat with detergent and hand-rub before machine washing. The washer cannot remove stains that have already bonded to the fabric.

10

Calibrate the Washer 5 minutes

If your washer has a calibration function, run it. Remove everything from the washer. Simultaneously press and hold Temp and Delay End for 3 seconds until Cb appears on the display. Press Start/Pause. The tub rotates back and forth for 1–3 minutes, then displays En, End, or 0, then turns off.

DIY Didn't Work? When to Call a Professional

Some cleaning failures signal a mechanical fault. Here's when to stop trying and call a technician.

If any of these are true, a professional technician will save you time, money, and risk:

  • The washer is not draining properly despite a clean filter — prevents proper rinsing
  • The drum has visible residue buildup that doesn't come off with a Tub Clean cycle
  • The washer is making grinding or scraping noises during the wash cycle
  • The water level seems too low for the load size even after adjusting load size
  • The washer is not filling with enough water — check the water inlet valve and pressure switch
  • You've checked all user-error causes and the cleaning problem persists
  • The washer is under 8 years old and the repair cost is under 50% of replacement
Why it matters: If your washer seems to be working fine — no error codes, no draining issues, no strange noises — but clothes aren't clean, it's usually a user-error issue, not a machine fault. However, if you've checked load size, detergent, water temperature, and filter, and the problem persists, there may be a mechanical issue — a failing water inlet valve, a pressure switch that isn't detecting the correct water level, or a worn motor that isn't agitating properly. A professional technician can diagnose these issues and determine whether a repair is worth the investment.

Washing Machine Not Cleaning Clothes FAQs

Why is my washing machine not cleaning clothes properly?

The most common causes are overloading the drum, using the wrong amount of detergent (too much or too little), using cold water that doesn't dissolve detergent, and residue buildup inside the drum or detergent drawer. In Saudi Arabia's hard water, detergent dissolves less easily and limescale reduces cleaning performance. Start by reducing the load size to 3/4 capacity, measuring detergent with a cup, switching to warm water, and running a Tub Clean cycle.

Why does my washer leave white residue on clothes?

White streaks or powder marks on clothes almost always indicate too much detergent, using non-HE detergent in an HE machine, or cold water that fails to fully dissolve powder detergent. Reduce your detergent dose by 25–50%, switch to HE detergent only, and use warm water for the wash cycle. Run an extra rinse cycle to clear any residual detergent.

Can too much detergent cause poor cleaning?

Yes — using too much detergent is just as harmful as using too little. Excess suds cushion the clothes so they can't agitate against each other properly, and they can also cause the washer to run at a reduced spin speed. Over time, detergent residue builds up inside the drum, dispenser, and hoses, creating a film that transfers onto clothes and makes them look grey or streaky.

Why are my clothes still dirty after washing?

Clothes that come out still dirty are usually overloaded or washed in the wrong cycle. If the drum is too full, detergent cannot reach all items and the tumbling action is reduced. Heavy or greasy stains also require pre-treatment — a standard wash cycle cannot remove stains that have already bonded to the fabric. Reduce load size, use the Heavy Duty or Prewash/Soak cycle for soiled items, and pre-treat stains before washing.

How do I fix my washing machine not cleaning?

Work through these in order: reduce the load to 60–75% capacity, measure detergent correctly with a cup, switch to warm or hot water for soiled loads, clean the detergent drawer and siphon, clean the debris filter, run a Tub Clean cycle, check that the hot and cold inlet hoses are correctly connected, level the machine, pre-treat stains, and calibrate the washer. If cleaning performance is still poor, there may be a mechanical fault.

Why does my washer leave dark marks on clothes?

Dark marks or grey smudges on washed clothes usually indicate residue buildup inside the drum that is transferring onto fabrics during the wash. This is common when fabric softener is used excessively or when detergent isn't fully rinsed. Run a Tub Clean or Self Clean cycle with a cleaning tablet, wipe the door gasket, and skip liquid fabric softener entirely.

What is the best cycle for heavily soiled clothes?

For heavily soiled items, use the Heavy Duty,Cotton, or Prewash/Soak cycle. Pre-treat tough stains with a stain remover before washing, and pre-soak collars and cuffs. Avoid the Speed Wash, Quick 15, or Wool/Delicates cycles for heavily soiled items — these are designed for short, gentle washes that won't lift ground-in dirt.

How do I clean my washing machine drum?

Run a Tub Clean or Self Clean cycle monthly with a washing machine cleaner tablet. Leave the drum empty. If your washer doesn't have a dedicated cycle, run the longest, hottest cycle available on an empty drum. After the cycle, leave the door slightly open to allow the drum to dry. Tub cleaning guide →

Why do my clothes smell musty after washing?

A musty smell after washing usually means mold or mildew has built up in the door gasket, detergent drawer, or drain filter. This is common in humid coastal cities like Dammam and Khobar. Run a hot Tub Clean cycle, wipe the door gasket weekly, clean the drain filter, and always leave the door ajar between washes. Bad smell guide →
