Types of top-load washing machines

Three configurations dominate the top-load market. Each has a different cleaning philosophy, price point and repair profile.

Most aggressive

Agitator Top-Load Washers

An agitator machine features a large vertical post with fins in the middle of the drum. The agitator spins during the cycle, forcing clothes together and using friction to clean them. Agitator washers have long been the standard, and they tend to be cheaper. By many accounts, agitators are among the most aggressive cleaning options, as the level of friction created between the post and fabric can work wonders with heavy-duty stains. Unfortunately, on higher soil level settings, the friction can be damaging to items — particularly clothes with straps attached — and may even contribute to shortening their lifespan. Moreover, that agitator pole can limit your ability to wash heavier items like comforters.

Gentler & roomier

Impeller Top-Load Washers

An impeller machine features a more low-profile disc or cone at the bottom of the drum. The impeller creates strong water currents as it spins and uses fabric-on-fabric friction to aid in the cleaning process. The good news about an impeller style washer is that the lack of an agitator pole means you can fit pretty much anything you want inside the wash basin, including most comforters and bedding. The poleless setup tends to be gentler on your clothes too, though the impeller still creates enough force to properly clean them. This style of machine often uses less water than an agitator as well, though cycle times tend to be longer.

Modern & efficient

High-Efficiency (HE) Top-Load Washers

HE top-loaders are the modern, water-efficient versions of traditional top-loaders. They use less water and energy than agitator models but still offer the convenience of a top-loading design. LG's HE top-loaders earned a reliability score of 97 points in Consumer Reports testing, far surpassing Samsung, GE, and Whirlpool. In Saudi Arabia, where water and electricity costs are rising, HE top-loaders offer meaningful long-term savings — usually recovering their price premium within 3–.

Semantic deep dive

How a top-load washer works

Understanding the mechanical principles behind the two top-load designs helps you predict failures and choose the right machine.

The vertical-axis design

Unlike front-loaders, top-loaders use a vertical-axis drum with a hinged lid on top. This design allows you to add forgotten items mid-cycle and requires no bending to load or unload.

Agitator mechanism

The agitator is a vertical post with fins that rotates back and forth, creating friction between clothes to remove dirt. It's the most aggressive cleaning method.

Impeller mechanism

The impeller is a low-profile disc at the bottom of the drum that rotates, creating water currents that move clothes through the wash water. It's gentler but requires longer cycle times.

Water fill

Top-loaders typically fill the drum with water. Agitator models use more water; impeller models use less. HE top-loaders use significantly less than traditional models.

Key internal parts

Lid switch — safety cut-off when the lid opens. Clutch — engages agitator or spin. Transmission — converts motor rotation into agitation and spin. Wash plate — the base of the drum that houses the impeller or agitator.

Feature entity section

Top-load washer features that matter

Eight features that actually affect daily ownership — not marketing bullet points.

Capacity (Cu. Ft.)

Top-loaders typically have larger capacities than front-loaders due to a wider drum. 4.5–5.0 cu. ft. is the sweet spot for most families; 6.0+ for large households.

Agitator vs. Impeller

Agitator for heavy-duty cleaning; impeller for gentler care and larger items like comforters.

ENERGY STAR Certification

Uses less energy than standard models. HE top-loaders are significantly more efficient than agitator models.

Lid Switch / Lid Lock

A safety mechanism that prevents operation when the lid is open.

Smart Features

Wi-Fi connectivity, app control and AI-powered load sensing. Brands like LG (ThinQ), Samsung (SmartThings) and Whirlpool lead here.

Auto-Dosing

Systems like Whirlpool's Load & Go™ automatically dispense the right amount of detergent — saving detergent and preventing over-sudsing.

Noise Level (dB)

Lower dB = quieter operation. Inverter motors are significantly quieter than traditional belt-driven motors.

Cycle Time

Top-loaders are faster than front-loaders. Impeller models run longer than agitator models.

Common top-load washer problems (and what they mean)

Top-load washers have a distinct repair profile — lid switches, clutches and transmissions are specific to this configuration. Pick your symptom below.

Washer won't drain (OE / drn / E1 error)

Water left standing after the cycle. The most common cause is a clogged drain pump filter or kinked drain hose. On LG top-loaders, error code OE is displayed when there is a drainage issue — the drain hose may not be installed correctly or the washer may freeze during winter. We clean the filter, check the hose for kinks, and replace the drain pump if needed.

Repair guide →

Washer won't fill with water (IE / F8 E1 error)

Washer won't fill. On LG top-loaders, error code IE may be displayed if the drum is not filled to a certain level — the taps and inlet hoses connected to the washer need to be checked. If experiencing the IE error during winter, the water pipes or inlet hose may be frozen. Check that the taps are open and the inlet hoses are properly connected.

Repair guide →

Washer won't spin (AE / LE / UE error)

Clothes coming out soaked. On LG top-loaders, error code AE is displayed when the gears responsible for rotating the drum cannot operate properly. LE and LE1 codes may appear when the motor is stuck. If a coin or foreign object is trapped between the wash plate and drum, it can interfere with the operation of the gear or motor, leading to AE, LE or LE1. We remove trapped objects, diagnose the clutch, and repair the drive system.

Repair guide →

Lid switch failure (fills but won't spin)

The washer fills with water but won't spin. The lid switch is a safety mechanism that prevents the drum from spinning when the lid is open. When it fails, the washer fills and drains but will not agitate or spin.

Repair guide →

Washer is making loud noises

Banging, grinding or squealing during the spin cycle. Common causes include worn drum bearings, unbalanced loads, or worn shock absorbers. Shock absorbers or suspension rods on their own are a mid-priced job. We diagnose and replace the specific worn component.

Repair guide →

Washer is leaking

Water on your laundry room floor. Common causes include a loose water supply hose connection, a misaligned drain filter, or a worn door seal. We find the source and fix it fast.

Repair guide →

Washer vibrates excessively / walks

Machine moves during spin cycle. Usually caused by the washer not being level, worn suspension components, or an unbalanced load. We replace suspension rods, shock absorbers, and level the machine.

Repair guide →

Washer smells bad (musty odor)

Top-loaders rarely get smelly, while front-loaders can if they don't get a chance to dry out. However, top-loaders can still develop odors if detergent residue builds up. Run the TUB CLEAN once a week for 3 consecutive weeks if a musty smell already exists.

Repair guide →

Clutch or transmission failure

Top-load washers use a clutch and transmission to control the agitator and spin cycle. When these fail, the washer may not agitate, spin, or drain properly.

How to maintain your top-load washer (and prevent costly repairs)

Seven habits that extend the life of any top-load washer — and cost almost nothing.

1

Run a Tub Clean cycle monthly

The tub clean cycle keeps your washer in optimal performance by removing detergent buildup and other residue, keeping your wash drum clean. It is recommended to clean the drain pump filter, detergent dispenser, inlet filters and door gaskets when performing a monthly tub clean. If a musty smell already exists inside the washer, run the TUB CLEAN once a week for 3 consecutive weeks.

2

Clean the lint filter

Press down the upper area of the filter case to remove. Unlock the cover, and clean the filter with running water and a brush.

3

Clean the detergent dispenser

Tiny debris, which are not easily visible, do not take much effort to prevent proper operation. Clean the dispenser regularly — especially if you use powder detergent or fabric softener.

4

Check hoses annually

Inspect inlet and drain hoses for cracks, kinks or leaks. Replace every. Burst hoses are one of the most common causes of catastrophic water damage.

5

Level the machine

An unlevel washer causes excessive vibration and can damage suspension components over time. Use a spirit level on top of the machine and adjust the feet until it sits flat.

6

Use HE detergent only

Non-HE detergent creates excess suds, which can cause Sud errors and extend cycle times. In Saudi Arabia, HE detergent is widely available and costs about the same as regular detergent.

7

Leave the lid open after use

Let the drum and lid area dry completely to prevent mold and mildew buildup. This single habit eliminates most odour complaints.

Top-load washing machine FAQs

Answers to the questions customers ask most.

Are top-load washers better than front-load washers?

Neither is universally better. Top-load washers are cheaper to buy and repair, faster, and rarely develop mold. Front-load washers clean better overall, use less water and energy, are gentler on fabric, and can be stacked. Top-loaders suit renters, tight budgets and anyone who wants no-bend loading; front-loaders suit efficiency-focused buyers and small spaces.

What is the difference between an agitator and impeller washer?

An agitator is a large vertical post with fins that rotates back and forth, creating friction to clean clothes. It is aggressive on heavy stains but harsh on fabric and limits bulky items. An impeller is a low-profile disc at the bottom of the drum that creates water currents. It is gentler, fits comforters and bedding, uses less water, but cycle times are longer.

Which top-load washer brand is most reliable?

In Consumer Reports testing, LG high-efficiency top-loaders earned a reliability score of 97 points, far surpassing Samsung, GE and Whirlpool, which remained in the 50-point range. In JD Power's 2026 quality study, GE top-loaders scored best at 60 PP100, followed by Maytag at 70 PP100 and Whirlpool at 71 PP100. Speed Queen is the durability leader for commercial-grade use.

How much water does a top-load washer use?

Agitator top-loaders use the most water — typically 30–45 gallons per cycle. Impeller top-loaders use less, around 20–30 gallons. High-efficiency (HE) top-loaders use the least, sometimes under 15 gallons. Front-loaders use the least of all, typically 10–20 gallons. In Saudi Arabia, where water costs are rising, HE top-loaders and front-loaders offer meaningful savings.

Why is my top-load washer not draining?

The most common causes are a clogged drain pump filter, a kinked drain hose, or a failed drain pump. On LG top-loaders the OE error indicates a drainage issue. On Samsung the 5C / 5E code indicates a drain malfunction. Check the hose for kinks, clean the filter, and if the problem persists the drain pump likely needs replacement.

Why is my top-load washer not spinning?

Common causes include a worn lid switch, a failed clutch, a stuck motor, or a foreign object trapped between the wash plate and drum. On LG top-loaders, AE indicates a gear error and LE/LE1 indicates a stuck motor.

How do I clean a top-load washing machine?

Run a Tub Clean cycle monthly with a washing machine cleaner or white vinegar. Clean the lint filter, detergent dispenser, inlet filters and door gasket. If a musty smell already exists, run Tub Clean once a week for 3 consecutive weeks. Leave the lid open after each use to let the drum dry completely.

What does the OE error code mean on an LG top-load washer?

OE on an LG top-load washer means a drainage issue. The drain hose may not be installed correctly, may be kinked, or the drain pump filter may be clogged. In winter, the washer or drain hose may freeze. Check the hose routing, clean the filter, and confirm the drain hose outlet is at least 60 cm high.

How long do top-load washers last?

Top-load washers typically last 10–. Maytag's commercial-grade top-load agitator washers average 12–. Lifespan depends on usage, water hardness, and maintenance. Regular tub cleaning, using HE detergent, and levelling the machine extend lifespan significantly.

Is it worth repairing a top-load washer?

Use the 8-year, 50% rule. Before year eight, repair almost anything.
